Biography

Born in 1964, Italian, Paolo Papale received his degree at the University of Pisa in 1990 with full honours, and since then started his scientific career which led him to the position of Research Director at INGV in 2003. From 2005 to 2010 he directed the national program in volcanic hazards. In 2013, and till 2016, he became the first Director of the new-born INGV Division of Volcanoes. From 2007 to 2011 he has been President of the GMPV (Geochemistry, Petrology, Mineralogy, and Volcanology) Division of the EGU – European Geosciences Union, and member of the EGU Council. From 2011 he is member of the Academia Europaea, Chair of the Earth and Cosmic Sciences section from 2017 to 2022, and Chair of the Class of Exact Sciences and Board of Trustees from 2022. From 2023 he is Fellow of the IUGG – International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics. Member or Chair of various award and medal committees, Coordinator or PI of various European and international projects, invited speaker at several international conferences, lecturer at many European and international Universities and scientific organizations, member of panel of reviews for US/NSF, EU/ERC and other excellence projects, and supervisor of tens of graduating, doctoral and post-doctoral students.
